Muffler in a Car Exhaust Manifold-
The term Muffler is a device that is primarily used for reducing the amount of noise or sound pollution emitted by the Automobile or any Machine. To reduce this noise many prevention steps are implemented. The effective way employed is the usage of Muffler, where it is directly connected to the exhaust pipe of the engine. Now-a-days mufflers are used for almost all the automobiles. Some special type of mufflers are also used which increase the power output of the engine by reducing the consumption of the fuel.
There are many types of mufflers.
1. Vector Muffler-
These type of mufflers are used for large trucks where the exhaust impulses cancel each other by using angle mufflers.
2. Spiral Muffler-
These type of mufflers are mostly used for normal cars and trucks we use in our daily life. The cost of these mufflers are also reasonable.
3. Aero Turbine Muffler-
These aero turbines use vacuum as the same way Vector muffler uses angle mufflers. This creates vacuum which at regular spaced intervals which in turn causes the negative back pressure and the sound gets cancelled.
Basic Classification of Mufflers-
A normal automobile requires a muffler to reduce even the small or large amounts of noise emitted by a vehicle. Mufflers are to be installed along the exhaust pipe as a part of the exhaust system to reduce its exhaust noise. Mufflers use special technology to cancel the each others sounds. So, we can say for sure that the mufflers can make a huge difference to the noise level of an engine. There are many types of mufflers namely Baffle type mufflers, Resonance type mufflers, Wave cancellation type, Combines resonance and absorber type, absorber type.
Baffle type muffler-
It is cylindrical in shape and contains many number of baffles that are spot welded from inside. From inlet, there consists of many baffles or obstructions one after the other left and right alternatively. When the inlet reaches the exhaust gas, it gets obstructed by a small amount one after the other and at the outlet, its sound will be completely diminished. The principle of design is to close all the direct passages for the gas to the exit. The low efficiency and the loss in the engine power are the major drawbacks.
Resonance type muffler-
Resonance type muffler is also known as Helmholtz type muffler. In this type of muffler, there will be many number of access ports with resonators. All of these are connected in series with a pipe that generally flows exhaust gases. The main advantage is there will be no resistance to the gas, so the generation of the power of the engine remains the same. The sound will be eliminated without the effect of the engine power.
Wave Cancellation type muffler-
These type of mufflers have a small box in it which is equipped with an outlet from the box. The exhaust gases are divided into two parts which of one gets out in small amounts and the other one gets rotated and will be explained below. The length of the parts should be first adjusted in such a way that after the gases come out of the muffler, the crests of one wave should coincide with the troughs of the second wave. By this cancellation effect of each other, it reduces the noise completely to zero level. The only disadvantage is the incomplete noise cancellation and can be used only for one particular frequency.
Combined Resonance and Absorber type mufler-
This type of muffler is the combination of both Resonance type muffler and the Absorber type muffler. Resonance type mufflers have a disadvantage of reduction in power generated by the engine. The Absorber type have a disadvantage of incomplete noise reduction. So the Combined Resonance and Absorber type mufflers are implemented to negate these effects.
