What is Electrical Discharge Grinding???

ELECTRICAL DISCHARGE MACHINING ( EDM )

The principle of electric discharge is as same that of the Electrical Discharge Machining. The machining method comprises of a dielectric medium. In this Electrical Discharge Grinding, a power supply of 40 Volts to 80 Volts are generally supplied. A servo motor system, ram, grinding wheel and many more are commonly used. The parts of Electrical Discharge Grinding is as follows-

The grinding wheel is made of an electrically conductive material. The material of the grinding wheel which is preferred mostly is Graphite. The wheel which acts as a cathode is partially immersed where as the component which acts as anode is completely immersed. The cathode and the anode are connected to the power supply.

The wheel rotates such that the dielectric flows in Inter Electrate Gap between the tool and the component. This eliminates the flushing of the gap. The machining is accomplished without any physical contact between the tool and the component. The mechanism of the material is same as that of Electrical Discharge Machining. The metal is removed by melting and vaporization. The desired material removal rate and the surface finish can be obtained by considering optimum machining parameters. Some of the parameters are current, pulse frequency and the wheel speed.

Applications of Electrical Discharge Grinding-

1. Machining of materials like cermets, super alloys and metal matrix components are done with the help of Electrical Discharge Grinding.

2. Electrical Discharge Grinding is applied for grinding the carbide tools and dies.

3. Machining of fragile components such as surgical needles, thin walled tubes and many more can be done with the help of Electrical Discharge Grinding.

4. Thin, slender and honey comb structured components can be easily machined with the help of Electrical Discharge Grinding.
