PARTS OF A LATHE MACHINE-

There are almost 18 parts after including all the major and minor parts of a lathe machine. Each and every part is first listed and then clearly explained below-

Parts of a Lathe machine-

1. Head Stock

2. Split nut

3. Carriage

4. Compound rest

5. Tail Stock

These are the major parts of a Lathe machine. The minor parts of a Lathe machine are as follows-

6. Apron

7. Main Spindle

8. Feed Selector

9. Clutch

10. Chip pan

11. Longitudinal and transverse feed control

12. Feed Rod

13. Lead Screw

14. Bed

15. Hand Wheel

16. Dead Center

17. Cross slide

18. Tool Post

1. Head Stock-

Head Stock consists of main spindle, Lathe dog, Lathe center or live center, collect chuck and speed control levers. It is the left most part in the Lathe machine. It consists of necessary transmission mechanism for obtaining different speeds.

2. Split Nut-

Split Nut helps to drive the carriage along the direct drive without getting the help of the clutch.

3. Carriage-

Carriage is located in the middle of Tail stock and the Head stock. It consists of compound rest, cross slide, guide ways, tool post and saddle. This is especially used for mounting and moving the cutting tools.

4. Compound Rest-

Compound Rest is mounted on the cross slide and this pivots round the tool post.

5. Tail Stock-

Tail Stock is the right most part of the lathe machine. This consists of dead centre. This tail stock can slide towards the head stock and must be placed at some distance according to the size ( Length ) of the work piece. Taper turning can also be done with the help of it.

The minor parts are described short and sweet.

6. Apron-

Apron is usually located near the carriage and helps in machining the work piece.

7. Main Spindle-

Spindle is a tool that rotates and helps in the machining of a work piece. To the spindle, work piece can be attached and machining can be done on the work piece with the help of a cuting tool fixed to the lathe machine.

8. Feed Selector-

Feed Selector helps to select the amount of feed given to the work piece with the cutting tool. It can be regulated with the help of a feed selector.

9. Clutch-

Clutch is used to shift the speed of the spindle from one speed. The speed of the spindle can be decreased and can also be increased with the help of a clutch. But one when we use this clutch, we need to stop the machining process, change the clutch and then again start the machining process.

10. Chip Pan-

Chip Pan is used to collect the chips that gets off from the work piece. When the cutting tool comes in contact with the work piece, the work piece will be machined and the scrap material will come out as chips.

11. Longitudinal and transverse feed control-

Longitudinal and transverse feed control is used to control the feed in Longitudinal and transverse directions. You can adjust the feed left or right and up or down.

12. Feed Rod-

Feed Rod is used for the change in transmission of power in the linear movement. This is the basic function of the feed rod.

13. Lead Screw-

Lead Screw is used to move the body with the direction or motion of the screew. This allows the machine to generate the threads on the work piece. For generating the threads, you need to decrease the speed. For decreasing the speed of the spindle, you need to change the paths with the help of a clutch.

14. Bed-

Bed is used to place Lathe machine on it so that any vibrations are not transferred to the surface and are eliminated.

15. Hand Wheel-

A Hand Wheel is round in shape and is used for the motion of the head front or back, i.e., to move right or to move left when viewed side wards.

16. Dead Center-

Dead Center is the place that does not move which is mostly the place where work piece is fixed either to be stable or in rotating position.

17. Cross Slide-

Cross Slide in the lathe machine is used to have a cross movement on the bed. It is attached to the carriage.

18. Tool Post-

A tool post is used to mount the tool with the help of a tool bit.

These are the minor parts of a Lathe Machine.
